Hellu Coffee: Korean-inspired Specialty Croffle Cafe Within CBD Area

If you're working (out) around the CBD area, there is a new rustic cafe where you can get your afternoon pick-me-up. Decked with dark wooden furniture and glass tables, the space has a cozy, homely feel.

Not a croissant, not a waffle, it's a croffle.

Croffles are the "in thing" these days, and Hellu Coffee offers both sweet and savoury options.

During our recent visit, the sesame cream croffle (S$7.90) was the only sweet option available, although there were many savoury ones to choose from - such as the ham & cheese croffle ($7.90) or the spicy tuna croffle ($7.90). It is also not uncommon for some of popular favourites to be sold out by early afternoon, especially on weekends.

The maple bacon croffle (S$7.90) was a mix of both; a savoury-sweet combination. You can expect the croffle to have a crispy exterior and a slightly buttery taste when eaten on its own. Lightly brushed with maple syrup and stuffed with a mix of bacon, caramelised onions and cheese, you would get a well-balanced savoury, umami profile that also had a slight sweetness.

Instagram-worthy drinks

The signature creamu drinks are inspired by the Viennese Einspänner, where a thick sweet cream sits atop of the coffee base.

Using a 2-beans blend from Tiong Hoe Specialty Coffee, the iced black was smooth and had a nutty profile with mild bitterness and acidity. The black creamu (S$8.20) is a great combination of the iced black and the dollops of silky-smooth sweet cream foam. The thickness of the cream also gave an advantage of it not sinking or mixing in with the drink base, unless stirred.

If you're a fan of matcha, you would be glad to know that they also have matcha creamu (S$7.50/S$8.90) and dirty creamu (S$9.50). The former is said to have a balance between the bitter rich matcha and sweet cream, while the latter is made with a matcha & espresso base.

Of course, you can also get your regular espresso-based drinks such as the espresso (S$4.20), white (S$5.70) or mocha (S$6.70). They also have a range of refreshing drinks created for the non-coffee fans including matcha tonic (S$7), yuzu lemonade (S$6.50) and white peach passion soda (S$6.50).

Worth the hype?

Compared to other aesthetic cafes within the area, the prices do match up to be on the higher side. Regardless, the instagram-worthy drinks and croffles are not only for the pictures but proved to be also decent and tasty.
