Cafe Brera at Reunion: Artisanal Bakery Opens Cafe With New Homemade Chicken Curry

If you're into breads or french pastries, you should be familiar with Bakery Brera located at Empress Road. They are known for offering freshly baked artisan breads, made using fine flours from France or Japan.

Opened just two months ago in early March, the new cafe is located at the museum's Reunion space, a separate building beside the main museum hall that is dedicated for seniors. You would also notice that majority of the team comprises of seniors, as part of an initiative for inclusive hiring. Being elderly-friendly, the cafe also offers dysphagia-friendly food, catered to people with swallowing difficulties.

Brunch, chicken curry and more

You can expect to find some of their popular breads and pastries, including the french butter croissant (S$3.80), almond croissant (S$5.80) or the pain au chocolat (S$5.80).

The kaya cruffin (S$5.80) is also another classic favourite. Heated up on request, you can expect the cruffin to have a crispy and flaky exterior, while being airy and buttery within.

The kaya fillings were fragrant and have a distinct coconut profile, albeit it could deem slightly sweet to some.

An exclusive addition to the cafe that you would not find at the bakery is the home-cooked chicken curry (S$12.80) that comes with a choice of bread (buttery loaf, wholemeal loaf, multigrain loaf or baguette).

You can expect the curry to have a very traditional taste; being slightly spicy, very fragrant and aromatic. The gravy was thick and a tad grainy, perhaps due to the small potatoes that cubes had been mashed and mixed in. The curry consisted of a tender chicken drumstick and bigger pieces of potatoes that were cooked till soft. The only gripe was that the baguette was hard and seemingly a little stale.

Quench your thirst with coffee (from S$3), tea (from S$2.50) or some refreshing coolers (from S$3.50).

But don't expect a professional barista pulling shots here, as the coffees are made using a machine. Regardless, additional points are given as the cappuccino (S$5.50) is served with a piece of fragrant butter cookie.

Complete your meal with some desserts, such as pulut hitam (S$4) or the basque burnt cheesecake (S$8.80).

You can also expect to share tables at the self-service cafe as there is a limited seating capacity.
