Ah Gong Minced Pork Noodle: $2.50 Claypot Minced Meat Noodles At Maxwell Food Centre

With the rising inflation rate, prices in most hawker stalls are averaging between $4 to $6 for a simple bowl of bak chor mee (minced meat noodles). But yet, there is one stall you can find in Maxwell Food Centre that sells a comforting bowl of bak chor mee for only $2.50!

And no, there's no catch - you don't have to be a student or an elderly to enjoy this benefit, it's available the public!

Handmade with love

You have probably tried claypot rice or prawn noodles served in a claypot - but you can seldom find minced meat noodles served in a claypot. The basic bak chor mee ($2.50) include the essentials only - noodles and minced meat, topped with a lettuce leaf and some shallots for additional flavour.

The signature bowl ($5) consists of a wider variety of ingredients, including handmade meatballs, handmade dumplings, fried beancurd skin, and similarly topped with pork lard and fried shallots. The noodles are served in soup by default, but you can also opt for dry (+$0.50). You could also choose between mee pok or mee kia for the noodles.

The dry version renders to be a slightly wetter one, but the noodles soaked it up in no time. The noodles were softer but still had a slightly springy texture to it. This was perhaps due to the heat retained in the claypot that continuously cooks the noodles to a certain extent, but it also ensures that the noodles are kept warm for a long period of time.

Tossed in their homemade sambal, you can expect the noodles to have a serious spicy kick, leaving you with a leaking nose. There is also a slight umami taste and fragrance from the fresh shallots added.

The noodles are served in a soup by default, and given on the side if you're having the dry noodles. Using only pork bones and without the use of msg to achieve that light, savoury profile and having a prominent taste of the flat fish.

The lightly marinated meatballs were huge, not too fatty and have a slight bouncy texture. While the fillings of the bite-sized dumplings fell out easily, both silky-smooth wanton skin and the fillings were still enjoyable.

Each order is also prepared freshly on the spot in an individual claypot over the firestove. You can only imagine it to be comforting and satisfying already, especially when you are craving for a simple, fuss-free meal.
